Breaking Free: My Journey to a Debt-Free Life
Share
When I decided to stop using credit cards altogether, it sparked a profound shift in my financial perspective. At first, credit cards felt like a convenient way to manage expenses, but that convenience often led to overspending and accumulating debt. I found myself caught in a cycle of minimum payments, high-interest rates, and constant stress.
So, I made the radical choice to shred my credit cards. That’s when everything changed. Suddenly, I was forced to rely on cash and debit transactions, which fostered a more mindful approach to spending. I could only spend what I actually had. Without the temptation of easy credit, budgeting became clearer and more achievable. I was grabbing the controls of my financial life.
The Reality of Living on Credit
Many families today live on credit, month to month, completely out of control with their spending. I know this because I’ve been there too. I’d look back at the end of the month, curious about where my money went: “What did we even buy? Oh, right, the couch on the credit card… what else?” It’s frustrating, and I still have to recalibrate my finances multiple times a month. Even though I’m passionate about debt freedom and wealth creation, I still find myself falling off the horse of positive fiscal responsibility.
That’s why I made the decision to own zero credit cards. I vowed never to borrow money for anything; I must pay cash. Radical? Maybe. But I’ve questioned my pursuits too. The strongest reason I choose this lifestyle of zero debt and zero credit is simple: I don’t want to play stupid games with creditors and banks. They win every time, and I’m stuck with the bill no matter if I pay off the credit card in full or not every month. It’s a trap I refuse to fall into again.
Embracing Financial Freedom
Since removing credit cards from my life, my net worth has exploded with growth faster than I’ve ever seen. No more cloudiness every month—just pure clarity about where to allocate my resources. Living debt-free allows me to tailor my life to pull me toward my purpose, which I believe is exploration and breaking people from the chains of debt. As I write this, I’m flying over a beautiful orange desert landscape, reflecting on the life I dreamed about as a child—just wanting to GO see and explore everything out there.
I was that kid at 11 who kept trying to persuade my friend, “Let’s get on our bikes and ride to WAWA! They’ll never know. We’ll say we went to M’s house to play basketball.” I’ve always been relentless in my pursuit of exploration, whether it was solo or with a friend. That spirit has never left me.
Chasing material possessions backed by debt poisoned my spirit in my younger days, teaching me some valuable lessons. But then I woke up and broke free—KABOOM! Like a cataclysmic explosion, I felt an immediate sense of relief and empowerment wash over me as I walked away from that shredder. And guess what? You can break free too.
